Great Minds Think Alike...

Well, I decided to change the name of the site. Why? Well, because I searched for it on Google and it turns out The Economist, a journal of some fame, has already used the title "Notes from a Banana Republic". I wouldn't want my august writings to be overshadowed by comparison with THE magazine for Little Mr. Capitalist, so I've decided to change it.

So welcome to "Banana Republic Daze", it's 20% better for you than "Notes from a Banana Republic" and lower in fat, too!

I like the new title, but what I really really like is the subtitle: "Inappropriate, Incorrect, Indecipherable". It hearkens back to that golden age of "Three. Word. Slogans." at the end of the last millenium -- probably the single most important contributor to the dot com implosion, if you ask me on a bad day (on a good day, I'd go on to talk about brand differentiation and then we'd order more beer).

Just back from our very own EU banana republic: Tenerife. The lush volcanic soil and perfect climate of this little island means that you could grow just about anything sub-tropical there: avocados, magoes, etc. But it's the only banana-friendly part of the EU, and so we don't have to buy our bananas from Uncle Sam's backyard, banana-growing is subsidised till it screams: Result = the small proportion of Tenerfie that is arable is devoted exclusively to banana production. It takes 300 litre of water to grow a kilo of bananas, so this puts the limited water supply under sever stress. Next step: rapid spread of wing farms to power new desalination plants. And all for a banana ....
